That sweet-sounding combo helped me remember why I hold the Stanley Brothers in such high lonesome reverence.
I have to say, I really hate to let them go but I have to be honest with my expectations for the SPL and material I play. Continuity allows us to run less bias than Class A (though not a lot less) and have the amp act like Class A even when it’s putting out more power than its Class A bias. The Aegir’s depiction of the contribution of drums and bass to rhythmically-driven music is simply first-rate. By “designed and built in California" this is what we mean: the vast majority of the total production cost of Aegir—chassis, boards, transformers, assembly, etc—goes to US companies manufacturing in the US.
Punctuation, timing, and points of arrival are so well depicted that the meaning of the music is utterly clear and readily understood. This de-biases the output stage completely and reduces standing power consumption significantly. I'm looking for a mono block to power my center speaker and not waste a ton of energy or have 400% more power than necessary.
Paradise fire map update: How did the Camp fire start in... Accenture CEO steps down due to health reasons.
The price is right too.
The power supply is completely linear, with 600VA transformer, over 150,000uF of filter capacitance, and 5 regulated power supply rails. Too objective for subjectivists; too subjective for objectivsts.
I’m getting ahead of myself. It can be acquired from Schiit directly, or one of their regional distributors. The amp is a wide bandwidth design and is DC coupled, a micro processor controls the power supply and protects the amps from faults. Phew. They have been around in the community for a long time already and have started out in 2010.
Even with the Aegir’s finned heat sinks running the full lengths of the chassis sides, the amp runs warm to the touch, so don’t plan on tucking this amp away inside a closed cabinet. Music instruments however, (except for synthesizers and perhaps the flute) DO NOT produce simple sine waves, but consist of complex irregular wave forms that rely on complicated transient performance to produce what we understand as music.
I'm with the others who have read the review and are itching to go out and get an Aegir -- or two! Or, 14.3/12.
Add its music-making abilities – its boogie factor, “PRaT,” drive, dynamics, involvement, foot-tapping, ass-shaking, head-bopping, and “Air”-instrument-inspiring performance – (areas in which the UK school- Linn, Naim, Rega, et al., have long ago set the template) and you have a sonic/music-making amplifier that can only be described as an absolute steal.
I need around 100 watts to drive a KEF LS50 center channel. that I am running with an Oppo 205 into an SMSL 98 dollar amp....and it sounds great. You’re going to need to run Aegir in a well-ventilated area. Paradox sounded tighter in the bass, less full, but similar extension and dynamics.
Class-AB amplifiers: Why does everybody make them? Went through psAudio's page for getting rid of humming noise, it does not work for me. Again, this is for a center channel in a theater set up with two 12" servo subs (soon to be four subs). - Freya + runs very very hot, the panel is almost untouchable, and the hottest area is above the transformer, not around the tubes. A quick check in the manual revealed that everything was in order. No hum. A big bruiser that hogs too much living space and costs a bloody fortune.
A nice resolving treble, that’s neither glaring or edgy.
The Aegir is a power amp and must be matched with a preamp.
Class A solid-state design is often prescribed as a panacea for solid-state ills.
The enemy of Class A design has always been heat. Meaning they don’t conform to the strict definition of Class A designs. The input impedance is set at 10k Ohms and Crosstalk lies >95dB. Is the Arya too much for it? We’d recommend you read John Broskie (tubecad.com) and Bob Cordell (cordellaudio.com) on the problems of transconductance doubling (we call it transconductance droop) and the various ways around it. Properly executed class-A sounds trippy and lifelike. – Headfonia Store aka Michael Ting! We do not accept orders via phone. Ragnarok 2 is a modular amplifier that comes in two variants.
But boy is this is the right dosage of just enough technical terms and meaningful language for subjective description of the aural quality. These non-harmonic, annoying, and aggravating distortions are vanishingly low in the Aegir. Without qualification, any such review sign-off remains toothless and impotent. Technically, Continuity is a way to eliminate transconductance droop outside of the Class A bias region, and extend the benefits of Class A biasing.
These small, finely crafted loudspeakers sound more right-of-tone and correct-of-balance than any other speaker I know. Class-D creates a simulacrum of the original signal, which feels slightly spartan and texturally different than class-A or -AB. We use cookies to ensure that we give you the best experience on our website. Manufacturer: Schiit Audio, 24900 Anza Drive, Unit A, Valencia, CA 91355. Jim Austin is the perfect person to review the relatively new JBL Synthesis S4700 floor-standing speakers ($15,000/pair) :-) .......... ... Pavarotti, then I'll wait for one that sounds like Carlo Bergonzi. I keep reading Stereophile for another Outstanding Discovery like this one that our Tyll & Steve G gave to me at RMAF 2011. ps. The difference between violins and violas, particularly in the frequencies where the two instruments overlap, was clear and obvious. Frequency Response: 20Hz-20Khz, -0.1db, 3Hz-500KHz, -3dB, SNR: >114db, A-weighted, referenced to full output, Damping Factor: >100 into 8 ohms, 20-20kHz. You peaked early with Casual Reactions, which was entertaining in its day. Schiit even provides detailed measurements from their Audio Precision measurement rig here.
Depends on what you mean by “better.” If you have guys who manage your funds and 30 tons of A/C on your 6000 square foot vacation home, sure, maybe Class A is ultimately better. Gorgeous sound erupted out of dead silence, just as it should. Best of all, Continuity ensures you see Class-A-like performance at all these power outputs.
HP was somewhat inspired writing so I sold TAS as well. If you need more oomph, buy two Aegirs, run each one as a mono amplifier, and get four times the power: 80 watts into 8 ohm speakers. He always makes me want to buy more equipment. Most amplifiers operate in Class A/B in an attempt to ameliorate the difficulties encountered in that crucial transition zone. The Aegir produces 20 watts per channel into 8 Ohms, 40 into a 4 Ohm load. Many of the instruments that serve as my acid-tests, which ordinarily bedevil run-of-the-mill transistor amplifiers, were sonically neutral and pure in tone with the Aegir.
