There are over five hundred indigenous nations in just the U.S. And there is no such thing as “Native American,” such as a “Native American” language or culture. When I’ve traveled to other countries to perform poetry, literature, or music, the audiences seem to have the most trouble with the notion that a nation can exist within a nation. JC: What are you reading at the opening night event at Cooper Union, which is on the theme of “Bravery?” How is “bravery” particularly relevant to your work and your past?
JH: I will be singing one of my poems in the Mvskoke language, and reading a new poem by the Navajo poet Sherwin Bitsui, in Navajo. It is everlasting yet is absolutely present. There are two recurring themes in the poetry of Joy Harjo, particularly in the book In Mad Love and War (1990). The logic that war is inevitable, and when it comes, what was once on the battle, is forever gone, replaced by new people, equipment, terrain, and ideology. But either way, he is very anti-war. Once I saw time meander then snap back into place in an ordinary room. Seven generations can live under one roof.
The author writes like she's the survivor of her nation and has this addiction to war and desire. Then, when war strikes the activists, they remain prepared and ready for the oncoming onslaught, but only time can tell what has replaced the scenery that was once the realm of something else. She performs steadily, and is working on a play entitled We Were There When Jazz Was Invented.
I often dream through other stories in other times and places, some not of this world. I don’t feel I’m particularly brave but I have been at the edge of many precipices in my life and made difficult choices. Often, those patterns are the most creative, though they may be the most challenging, even painful. On one hand there is revolt against the process of colonisation; on the other hand there is the need to forgive those barbarities, with a view to inaugurating a new chapter in the history of the multicultural nation. Harjo draws on First Nation storytelling and histories, as well as feminist and social justice poetic traditions, and frequently incorporates indigenous myths, symbols, and values into her writing.
“Equinox” more with the internalization of the memory of violence. “I was entrusted with carrying voices, songs, and stories to grow and release into the world, to be of assistance and inspiration,” she writes in her recent memoir, Crazy Brave.
JC: What literary themes, forms, and perceptions do you draw from your lineage?
It appears that this poet was either exposed to war or is simply an activist or against warfare on humanitarian grounds. We enter into a family story, and then other stories, based on tribal clans, on tribal towns and nations, lands, countries, planetary systems and universes. We humans are created of both—they make a weave and even constitute the energetic system of our minds, bodies, and spirits. It is a tricky being.
