A lone Otevrel -- evidently an outcast to be this far from home and in no apparent hurry to return -- sat quietly in a far corner, one slim tendril tracing the lip of his glass with a slight, silky tone. My respect for Ferengi and Quark grew by leaps after reading this. I enjoyed this book because the story was so believable, unlike some Star Trek stories. Quark stood behind the bar and anxiously studied the display screen above the replicator. It's sort of funny, I feel more like this is a story told by Quark himself, rather than a novel written by Armin Shimerman and other authors. The messages regarding racism and the cycle of violence are well-represented in this novel's pages, and the story carries on the proud Trek tradition of shedding light on issues of social justice and liberal ideals. And somewhere, Quark was fairly sure, Odo lurked. It took less than a week. Pretty fun and quick DS9 read - would definitely recommend to a Star Trek fan. Unable to add item to List. This was not the fun Ferengi romp that I was expecting, but the author does really demonstrate a knowledge of Trekdom. The sole menace Morn posed, Quark mused, would be if he were to end his patronage here, because Morn had been a regular in the bar for almost as long as the place had been open, Quark had come to regard the monthly payment of his tab as a long-term business asset. Although I was at first disappointed by the tone of this book, I was still drawn into the story and had to complete it. Every few seconds, one complicated set of matrices replaced another, causing the display to emit a soft electronic hum, and Quark's mind hummed along with it. Armin Shimerman and David R. George III have crafted an excellent tale that fits very well into the Deep Space Nine continuity, and forces the reader to look at the Ferengi in a way that is all-too rare: not as silly, over-the-top antagonists, but as well-rounded characters fully deserving of respect and consideration. Still, it's a safe bet that in any given episode or book, featured Ferengi will serve as comic reief.
