In the Santiam River system, where this is a minor fishery, smallmouth bass are found in the mainstem and in the lowest sections of the South Santiam. And while you’re at it, make sure you know the differences between brook trout and protected native bull trout (ODFW has a comparison in its regulations).
There is only a small chance of finding a fin-clipped hatchery steelhead during the winter season. For trout, a dry/dropper rig are the way to go for the rest of the spring. The best plan is always to closely read the regulations, which are in linked in the Resources section at the bottom of this article. The forks join into the mainstem just south of the town of Jefferson not far east of Interstate 5, for a relatively short trek to the Willamette River.
